Complaint / review text:
I went in for Chiari Malformation Decompression surgery on 4/26/12. Seemingly the surgery was a success and I was sent home 4 days later.
A few days after returning home (4 hours away from the hospital) I had several severe complications (spinal fluid leakage, high fever, hallucinations, total delirium, etc.) When my husband called my surgeon's office he was told to take me to the local hospital. The local hospital refused to treat me because they didn't perform the surgery. They in turn sent me via ambulance to Cleveland Clinic. Once there it was discovered that I had contracted bacterial meningitis while in the surgery room.
I was then taken back into surgery to repair the spinal fluid leak and for exploratory surgery to check out the damage of the meningitis. While there, I developed severe irritation in my right eye. After several family members repeatedly inquired about my eye, I was treated for pink eye and sent home with a PICC line to treat the meningitis. Upon seeing an opthamologist for my eye due to the fact that the irritation was not clearing up and I was losing vision in it; I was told that I had contracted both a bacterial infection and a virus and that my vision loss will be permanent.
To date, (six months later) I am STILL having problems with irritation in my eye and continue to lose more of my eyesight. Due to the bacterial meningitis, I have no memory or recollection of SIX WEEKS of my life. I also have stitches (not disolvable) that were left in my incision that are now and have been infected and continue to fester. Cleveland Clinic doctors will NOT address these issues!
They tell me to see a "local doctor" and the local doctors tell me to go back to Cleveland Clinic! I have never lodged a complaint against any company before but this place deserves it. I work in the healthcare field and am aware of many disgruntled patients and often have disregarded them due to thinking they are drama queens or wimps.
Karma for those actions has come to haunt me. Please, if you are considering treatment at cleveland clinic - - - - — don't do it!!!
