Complaint / review text:
A portion of my mortgage was sold to Ocwen a few years ago. I recently received a letter from Ocwen asking for my social security number for IRS purposes. I didn't send it back because my mortgage company should already have that. I then received a phone call at work (a number I never give out) and they left a message for me. I called the number back the next day. The operator asked for my account number. I didn't have it. She asked for my social security number. I told her that my mortgage company should already have that. I asked if she could look it up with my address and she mumbled something and then asked if I spelled my name "Stephenie". (No one spells it like that.) I told her it should be spelled with an A and she said, "Oh I see it now. Can you verify the last 4 numbers of your social security number?" I thought about it a second and then gave it to her. Now I regret it. There are too many things ask to verify your identity using the last 4 of your social security number.
She then tried to convince me that even though they had my social security number, then needed me to confirm it so they could send it to the IRS so I could receive tax benefits associated with mortgage interest payments. I asked if I could send it to the IRS and she said it had to come from the mortgage company. I said that they are my mortgage company, they should have my social security number already. She said, "We do have it - we verified the last 4 digits of your social security number." (Yeah, that's because I just gave it to you.) I said that I’m not giving them my social security number. She said, "That is ok. No one is going to force you to give it to us." I have had no problems with Ocwen so far, but something is wrong with this.
