On May 7th I called to see about having my payments reduced. I was told that I would qualify for Pay As You Earn, but that to get that type of repayment I would need to consolidate my loans. I was very clear and asked if consolidation would affect my progress towards my Public Service Loan Forgiveness (as a teacher in a title one school my loans are forgiven after 120 on-time payments of which I had already made roughly 48 payments) and I was told it was not. I did the paperwork with the customer service agent on the phone to make sure everything was done properly.
A few weeks later I get communication telling me that my loan amount did not change. When I called to ask why I was told not only do I not qualify for Pay As You Earn, but that by consolidating my loans I have voided my four previous years of on-time payment and start back at year 0 for my Public Service Loan Forgiveness. I was so shocked and I asked if there was anything that could be done to reverse this. I was apologized to a lot, however no one is sure if they can even help me. I am so angry that I did everything I was told to do and they not only didn't lower my payment, but put me in a worse position than I was before. Essentially, they lied to me and, as a result, I have to make payments for longer.
