Complaint / review text:
I see a lot of people complaining about collection companies. I recently paid an old Verizon bill to Allied Interstate.
No problem. If I owe a debt, I'll pay it. What I don't know how to combat though is that Verizon or some other collection company has apparently sold and resold that old account, and now I'm getting multiple hits on my credit report for the same debt! How the heck do I a) get them to stop selling a paid-off debt, b) get them to leave me alone, and c)—and most important—fix my credit report?
The debt was for like $70. It must have been a final bill that I didn't receive when I moved out of my house. Anyways, now I have some place called AFNI trying to settle it (for a higher amount, mind you) and some other company sent me a letter a couple days ago. I tried writing to the Afni place and telling them I dispute the debt and it's already paid to another company, but they sent back another letter asking ME for information.
I'm not going to give them any, but the important thing is that it's on my credit report now in 4 places, Verizon, Allied, Afni, and the 3rd collection company. Any suggestions?
