Complaint / review text:
In March of 2011 I sent a application to Nelnet and US D of E, to start the process for a total and permanent discharge of my student loan as I am disabled.in April, 2011, I received a letter from Nelnet and the Loan Servicer that I had proved my disability and that I would be put on a conditional discharge for 3 years and that March 10,2014 would be my discharge date.
I followed all the income rules etc. For all 3 years. During the 3 years they lost paperwork in the process but nothing too major until Feb. Of 2014 I received a letter stating that my loans were discharged Feb.
3,2014 but that I was now having to do another 3 years of a post-discharge. So I proceeded to call Nelnet and ask them what was up. I spent a whole morning and went through 6 different people who all had different stories of why this has happened. The best I could understand with all the different stories is that supposedly they filed my application under an old regulatory rules that went into affect July of 2010... Mind you my application was filed in March of 2011???
What... So what they are saying is they filed my appl. Under old regulations dating almost a year prior??? Not!!! What I think they are doing is going under the new regulations that went into effect July of 2013 which states... The 3 year post-discharge.
The regulation at the time of my application it was called a 3 year conditional discharge... Which I completed. Here is the clincher... They fully admit they made a mistake but there is nothing they can do to fix it and there is no one to contact in upper levels of authority??? Mind the highest authority I was told I could speak with was the Account Supervisor... Unbelievably Absurd!!! This all happened today so I will keep you all posted.
Also I have a message into the Washington DC Head of Education Regulations.
For anyone wanting this # it's 202-219-7048 or 202-502-7551. And FYI... The last company that was contracted with the US Department of Education was fired for corruption... What's to say that Nelnet isn't doing the same???
