After around 5,000 miles my GL550 started displaying a Fault message "Active Blind Spot Assist Inoperative". I now have 50,000 miles on the vehicle and the fault has not been corrected by Mercedes factory technicians after excessive multiplied visits to the dealership. The Mercedes corporate engineering group has been involved in the diagnostics process and has not been able to identify the problem. I have just reached my twenty-four month anniversary of ownership and have made eighteen months of service visits trying to correct the issue. I have asked Mercedes on several occasions to put me into another vehicle because of the safety issue this problem presents. They have not provided any reply other than wanting to keep trying to find a fix. Maybe their admission of a fault issue that they cannot fix would lead to a recall of other affected vehicles and whatever else their attorneys are afraid of.
They even had the gall to complain about the miles I am putting on the vehicle and the impact on the vehicle value. My response was that there is not any trade-in value on the car because it has a warranty issue that they cannot fix. Somehow I am the bad guy for creating excessive depreciation through excessive miles, while they continued to tinkered with the "blind spot assist" warranty issue.
Bottom line is that Mercedes does not protect the owner from financial loss when their products cannot be fixed. I have been very patient only to find that Mercedes is using my kindness against me. It seems crazy that a company that advertises itself as a luxury car manufacturer would find it against company policy to take care of a customer in a timely manner, regardless of the cost to Mercedes. I have to assume that their reputation does not mean much in a big marketplace that has millions of targets for their unprofessional handling of a one-in-a-million warranty defect. The moral to this story is "don't buy Mercedes products" unless you want to back the warranty yourself.
