Complaint / review text:
Purchased (€60) Mcafee cover end of 2013 and then had all kinds of pop-ups leading to virus infection. When I contacted Mcafee I was sent on to a "support system" of theirs. Control of my laptop was taken over online by a member of staff of this company and the problems were "resolved". Towards the end of this service (which took approx. 2 hours) I was told that there was a charge of €100 for this and that it included cover for the next 12 months. I felt I had no choice but to pay this although I got no explanation why these problems arose just after I had purchased Mcafee cover. Several weeks later the same problems started to occur with my laptop and I contacted the security company. They told me I had no account with them and would have to pay €100 to go ahead with the service. Fortunately I had the reference number for the previous payment and they admitted I was covered but suggested I might like to upgrade that to a 24 month cover and pay the extra there and then. I was immediately on my guard but as I had the cover with them and am in no way computer savvy I sat through the whole 2 hour process again. As the staff member took control of my laptop I could see items being deleted whose presence on my laptop pre-dated my previous service.in other words "bad" websites which caused the initial problems had not been deleted during the first 2hour session at the start of 2014. I repeatedly said this to the service person and he just kept repeating standard phrases which really did not relate to what I was saying. I also stated that I had no knowledge of these websites and I am the sole user of this laptop so surely Mcafee's protection if it was effective should not have allowed them to access to my laptop. I may at this stage point out that at all times I found it difficult in the extreme to communicate with the service members all of whom spoke with very strong accents and whose English was not perfect.
Suffice to say that following on completion of this service, I again had the malware popping up and so I sent my laptop back to the store from which I purchased it. That was last year and when it was returned it was in perfect working order (cost of €50 despite having a 5year extended warranty separately paid for €120) and had Avast free security installed and this has served me well since. During that 12 months, I received constant messages from Avast saying I needed to upgrade but despite my never having done this my laptop continued problem-free. This past week I was receiving messages from Avast that my free security was in it's last days and I needed to renew which I did online yesterday. Since I installed it (via clicking on an email from them as advised) I now seem to have no security and cannot contact Avast despite trying for the past 24 hours.
When I clicked on troubleshooting with Avast I was put through to the same support system which Mcafee gave me so I was back to square one.
I have googled "how to contact Avast" and now I see the dire reviews for both Avast and Mcafee. Is there no body to oversee and regulate this chronic dire so-called service and sharp practice of taking an annual fee for cover and when a problem arises passing the customer over to a separate company to whom further monies have to be paid?
