Complaint / review text:
Our furnace stopped during a storm last winter. I called the number on the sticker on the furnace for service (Direct Energy) and asked for service. I did not have a service contract with them. During the lengthy discussions in trying to simply get a service person to come to the house, a verbal contract was implied. It seems I was hornswoggled into a verbal agreement for a service contract for one year. I don't think I agreed to a contract for a year. Even so, Direct Energy promised to look into their archives and provide me with a transcript of the original phone call. The promise was for news within 2 days. No news yet after two weeks. I have tried to annul the contract, which DE has refused to do. I have spent hours on the 'phone to little avail, and been harassed by DE's automated telephone collections division.
Inquiries to others about Direct Energy have revealed other, but different, suspect practices.
I suggest that anyone who has a contract with Direct Energy NOT renew it. The service they provide is not worth the money, even though the service person who came to our home did a good job.
