I have lived in several areas around the country and never have a dealt with such an unethical cable company, or company of any sort, until my dealings with Charter. I moved to a new apartment mid-month. I signed up for a "bundled" home phone, cable, and Internet package with Charter. I didn't receive any sort of a bill until the end of the following month. The bill I finally received charged for a full-month's service for the first month, rather than addition they charged for the second month, AND added the upcoming month as a "pro-rated" fee!

I called Charter customer service in an effort to work something out. I explained to them that I am on full disability and as such I have a strictly limited income. There is no possible way I can pay for 3 months of service at one time. I had budgeted for the one and a half months of service I'd used - period. Charter's customer service representative became insulting and hostile toward me. She treated me as if I was a deadbeat refusing to pay my debts. Even after requesting to speak to a manager, Charter refused to work with me. I paid for 2 months of service by cutting into my food budget. Every month thereafter Charter tacked on late fees to my bill.

4 months later, after calling customer service every month to resolve this issue - in vain - Charter held my payment for 5 days after I submitted it electronically. At this point their fees had doubled my monthly payment. When Charter processed this payment late, somehow their timing caused the payment to bounce. Charter re-submitted this payment 4 additional times, racking up over $100 of NSF fees with my bank. I was able to work the banking issue out - but Charter continued to be belligerent and uncooperative.

Now - Charter has cut off my service and they insist that I pay $500 before they will even allow me to cancel service with addition, Charter has told me the only way to cancel service is to drive their equipment to a local service center to return it and pay the ridiculously inflated bill at that time! Until then Charter will continue to tack on fees. This is extortion! I intend to complain to the Attorney General and on every possible forum. Charter's business practices and unethical and just this side of illegal.
