Complaint / review text:
I purchased a 50" rear projection high definition TV in 2003. I had problems as soon as I hooked up everything, it had spots on the screen, I called Philips. They told me this sometimes happens and will go away in approximately 30-45 days, if not they will send out a tech. They did and I watched him totally tear apart my brand new $1800.00 TV.in my living room. This made me sick to my stomach to watch, he spent all day trying to find the problem. When he told me I don't know what's wrong and I am going to order these parts. When they come in, I will be back, he called a few days later, he came back and worked a full day installing new parts. This did not fix the problem, he said and I quote this, "I'm ready to just get you another one, then he took apart the screen saver and the screen and found some debris left between the screens from manufacturing this repaired the problem.
I purchased an extended warranty with the TV and I'm glad I did because in the middle of July 2004, the spots came back and everything on the screen was outlined in blue. I called Phillips again, they told me to call a local repair shop and they would repair it. I called them, they came to pick it up when they were rolling it down my hallway out the door they were in a hurry, hitting things. I told them to slow down, this is not a 3.00 toy, please be careful. Then they went off the porch with it and broke off a section of the rear wood casing. I told them that's enough. I will load it myself, you are not going to destroy my TV. They told me, "Sorry about that, " then loaded on the truck. They brought it back on 7-28-2004. They told me they replaced to ic something and it is fixed.
I hooked everything up and the spots were gone but everything still had a blue outline and they did not bring back the correct remote control. I called them on this and they told me it is the correct remote and the blue outline is not the problem. I need to adjust the picture. I argued with them on the remote and offered to show them a picture of the one they took. They said, no need to because I have the correct one. I finally just let it go, now I have been trying to contact Philips with the numbers I have in the owners manual.
They go to meet a woman in your area. I got on the web to find a number, I called Philips and the lady was rude and told me she could not help me, and I'm sorry but you bought a 1800.00 dollar piece of junk. This was today 2-25-2010. My problem now is one of the projectors had leaked out all the cooling fluid onto my floor and inside the TV. I cleaned it up and used a wet vac to remove it from the circuit and PC boards of the TV. She told me these were not good quality units. I did a lot of research before I bought this one, at the time the flat screens were coming out and the ones I looked at were from 8000.00 to 10,000.00 dollars, so this projection TV. With HD was the one to buy, and I would get 15-20 years of service from it. I realize it is 7 years old now but I have had 5 back surgeries in the past 6 years and this TV has not been used a lot. After each surgery, I was down for approx. 4-8 months on each one. I take very good care of everything I own. I'm not rich by any means, so I have to take care of stuff. I treat this TV as if it is one of my children and it looks as good today as it did when I purchased it.
On the first page of the owners manual, it states, "Thank you for your confidence in Philips." I have selected one of the best-built, best - backed, products available today and we will do everything in our power to keep you happy with this purchase for many years to come. As a member of the Philips "family", I'm entitled to protection by one of the most comprehensive warranties with outstanding service in the industry. Sincerely -Lawrence J. Blanford, President and Chief Executive Officer. Quiet the sells pitch, I had to contact several repair shops to see what it would take to repair it [due to the lady at Philips electronics telling me she could not help and there is no one else I could talk to about this, just buy your self a new TV] the repair shop told me it will be about 700.00-800.00 dollars to rebuild the leaking projectors and the cooling fluid is poison [the lady at Philips did not bother to tell me this] and I have grand children at my house often as well as my to small inside pets. This does not set well with me.
I spend my money wisely and try to buy the best I can afford. I now, I'm stuck with an $1800.00 fish-tank, this is not right and I will never buy another Philips product again and also I asked the lady at Philips if they sold out. She told me, "No we did not, we are still the same company." I asked this because none of the phone numbers in my manual are Philips electronics, so I asked 6 different repair shops about this. They told me they did sell-out and they will not help customers and a lot of shops will not work on they're stuff because of this, so this leaves the buyer out in the cold but Philips has their money. I guess that is what matters to them. The numbers in my manual are, 1-800-531-0039,1-800-952-3254, the model of my TV is, 50pp9202, sr.# 77377022, hope this helps buyers to beware of Philips electronics. Thank you.
