In June of this year, as I prepared to move my elderly mother in to my home, I contacted the local telephone service and arranged to have her service transferred into my name and to my address at the end of the month. When she moved on the 29th of June, the service was changed over to Comcast. I contacted both companies to ensure that the transfer had occurred. AT&T informed me that only Comcast could discontinue the service when they imported the number. Comcast informed that it had been done, and indeed the service is working under Comcast, and has been since the 29th of June.
At the end of August my mother received a bill for $201.05. A call to AT&T was received by an extremely rude gentleman who informed me that the number had never been released to Comcast and was in fact a still active number in my mothers name, that I could not disconnect it because then she would lose the number, and that the bill was past due. Two weeks later, I received a bill for $255.27.
