I had my own AOL account under my name, and when I recently moved in with a friend (who had a existing AOL account) I decided to cancel my service. My friend and I were going to split the bill. To my knowledge, I cancelled the service with a customer service representative. I closed my old checking account from my previous state and forgot about the entire situation.
4 months later I received a notice at my new address that they were sending me to a collections agency if I did not pay them $98.73. I called the company, and they refused to give me ANY customer service because I didn't have the last 4 digits of the credit card used on the account (remember, this was a check card from a closed checking account) They explained if I called FROM the telephone # where the account was set up, that would work too. This was a different number than my home number.
I traveled twenty minutes and called from that number, and then I got customer service. Harold told me he would split the bill with me, and so I sent in $49.37. I received another notice of collections 2 weeks later for the remaining amount.
Now, I moved again to go back to school. Now there was no way to verify my account. I spoke with 7 representatives before getting a manager, and he basically told me if I didn't pay the amount, no exceptions, I would go a collections agency. I have no choice but to pay somewthing I feel I don't owe.
