After 42 years of owning a house, I rent now. The last house that I owned, built by Pulte Homes, was one of more than 5,000 at Sun City Hilton Head, SC.
In 2005 I discovered that Pulte substituted nails for hurricane clips in roof truss connections. The building code requires that houses in this coastal area be capable of withstanding 130 mph hurricane-force winds. The county building inspectors just let it happen in thousands of houses. There are other widespread problems with these houses, including defective stucco, cracked foundation slabs and leaking roofs.
Do your homework before you buy! Beware of shoddy new home construction and ineffective, virtually nonexistent, government regulation.
Buying a house from Pulte Homes was an expensive mistake.in 2004 we contracted with Pulte Homes to build us a house at Sun City Hilton Head, SC.
By 2007 we realized that we made a mistake.in 2012 we put the house up for sale and moved. It finally sold last month. Between the loss that we took on the house selling for less than we paid for it, the money that we put into it, moving expenses, and community dues, insurance, property taxes, etc.
For the year and a half that it was up for sale, our loss on the house exceeded $50K. If only I had done my homework BEFORE I signed a contract with Pulte Homes to build us a house...
It was an expensive mistake. Moral of the story: Do your homework BEFORE you sign on the dotted line.
