When we tried to coverage information for my elderly mother via the 800 number, the Medicare representative hung up on me as well as my insurance representative; separate calls. I was in the middle of a sentence explaining the statute to the rep that allows special enrollment period applicable to my mom.
As I stared at the Medicare website, she kept telling me it contained limitation language that does not exist on the page. I was prepared to engage in a discussion and was seeking information. She wanted nothing more than to get off the phone. My first clue should have been when she answered my call (after a fairly short wait) and just said brusquely, "Hello." No name, no "social security administration, " just Hello (with an implied "why the F are you bothering me?") I don't know why we're paying these folks.
The man who hung up on my insurance agent yesterday did so as she was thanking him for his time.
I'm sure they have a tough job, but (a) the rep was wrong about available coverage (I've read the statute) and (b) their rudeness likely makes it rougher. If another option existed, I'd take it in a heartbeat and trash Medicare.
