I moved to Maryland from FL and had to rent a storage space from Public Storage for approximately a year. I took a flight to FL and rented a truck to drive my items back to MD on the same day. I arrived at Public Storage as soon as they opened. When I walked to my storage unit, large roaches were running in and out of my unit. I have never had roaches in my entire life! Upon opening my storage unit, I began to pull out my boxes, bed, sofa, TV, etc. And discovered that my entire unit was infested with roaches. And mice droppings were all over my things. I was devastated and in tears! This is my entire life, my three year old toys, blankets, and bedding; everything was completely destroyed!

I immediately went to the office and asked them what was going on; did they have an infestation problem and what were they going to do about my thing being damaged? The manager brought a can of roach spray to me and said that was all he could do! He said that they were not responsible because even though I did not have roaches or mice, someone else next to my unit could have brought it in with their items and it possibly came over to my unit. He could not do anything about it. He said I needed to pay for new Public Storage boxes if I needed it and he was not allowed to do anything about it.

I went back and forth about this with him and expressed how unfair this was and that my things were damaged. And I explained that I had to drive back to MD the same day and only had my sister to help me move my items that I could salvage. After that, he gave me 10 new boxes. My sister and I had to go through each and every box and throw out what was not salvageable and repack the things that did not have mice droppings. It took us 6 hours. I was devastated! It seems Public Storage was very much aware of this problem within their facility because when I was unpacking, we noticed that there was mice poison packets at the corner of the door of my storage unit which was not there when I initially stored my items the year prior. I have never had mice or rats or roaches ever!

Everything I owned was in this storage unit, and a lot of my items were damaged because of this. He offered to discard the damaged things. I took pictures with my cell phone of the tons and tons of large roaches that were in my storage unit and of the items that were damaged. It was horrific and disgusting! I was just starting my life over and I couldn't afford to get rid of everything and could not afford to replace everything either. I had to throw away half of my life possessions that had sentimental and financial value to me. When I left my belongings at the rented storage unit with Public Storage, my belongings were in pristine condition. When I returned I could not believe my eyes!

I will never, ever store my belongings at Public Storage or any storage facility for that matter for as long as I live. This experience was one of the worst I have ever had. I can't believe such a large, successful company as Public Storage would have facilities as such and do nothing for the customer in such cases. I paid a total of approximately $1,860 for the year to store my items! What a rip off! I lost a lot. I had to drive back to MD the same evening with the salvageable items and never could replace the items that I lost. I contacted the District Manager for this store and to date never received a return phone call, much less an apology letter!
