Billing after contract was cancelled

May my contract was due to expire, due to lack of advice and willingness from MTN to assist me with upgrade info i cancelled my contract i was advised by a call agent that i can cancel my contract first thing in the morning of the new billing month reason for waiting until the absolute last minute was not to lose my build up balance on my current contract as they do not give you your rand value you build up when you go over to prepaid, the call agent assured me my contract is paid up to date and i will not be held liable for cancelling my account on the first new day of the billing cycle. At the end of May my last debit order was deducted and in June no debit order was deducted so i felt comfortable that all my affairs with Mtn is in order UNTIL July Mtn started sending me sms messages my account is overdue, i sent an email to customer services asking them to provide me with a reason for the account i did in the meantime port my nr to another service provider, i had no feedback on my first email, so i sent a 2nd mail asking for feedback at a certain time or i will reverse the d/o so still no response i sent back the d/o, and now received a sms with a even higher outstanding balance!
