I've been with PP for about 4 months. I've had no issues whatsoever.
I cannot tell the difference versus being with Verizon. I've been reading the reviews and I think there's a factor some folks are missing. I think the key to my good experience is that I found a local dealer who is great. He took care of the porting, patiently answers all my questions, and is very knowledgeable.
He never tries to talk me into or out of anything. He just gives me information and discusses the options with me. I don't know the entire setup for dealers, but mine has his own website and I can go there and pay my bill. He gets a little cut if I pay through him and not directly with PP; which I'm happy to do.
This may not be an option for everyone, but I would highly recommend that you try to find such a dealer. As some other have pointed out, keep in mind that this is a pre-paid plan.
No pay, no play. Just don't expect the same system of support as you would have with a main carrier.
Each person has to decide whether the super safety net or savings are more important.
