I had to attend a funeral in Israel. As I could not book return flights with any airline, I booked with Ethiopian Airlines the Johannesburg-Tel Aviv leg and with El Al the Tel Aviv-Johannesburg one. I paid R5,603.00 with Ethiopian and R14,722.00 with El Al. El Al, having a non stop direct flight uses less fuel, pays less airport taxes and incurrs less operating costs. Both flights were full. A slight price premium is expected on a direct flight, but to pay almost three times the price charged by the competition for the same distance, is plain abuse and equivalent to a daylight *. How can El Al support such inflated prices? Comparatively also Ethiopian had a new modernly fitted plane, while El Al uses an old antiquated one. How do helpless victims safeguard against unscrupulous service providers?
